ʿis proud to announce that the Global South Award has been renamed the ʿMargaret A. Vogt Award for Global South Scholars, in honor of the late Professor Margaret A. Vogt, a distinguished African scholar and leading voice in international peace and security.

The name change was officially announced during the Global South Award Lecture held on 16 July 2025 at the ʿWorld Congress in Seoul. The lecture was introduced by Irasema Coronado, WC2025 Co-Chair, and featured the 2025 award recipient, Zaynab El Bernoussi. Professor El Bernoussi delivered an award lecture titled F

ʿ Margaret A. Vogt

Margaret Aderinsola Vogt (26 May 1950 - 23 September 2014) was a prominent African scholar and diplomat who played a leading role in international peace and security. She served as an Associate Professor at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, where she established the Strategic Studies Unit. She later held academic positions at the Nigerian War College and the Command and Staff College in Jaji. 

Her career extended to international diplomacy, where she served as Chief of Staff of the African Union's first Chairperson and later as the United Nations Special Representative and Head of the Peacebuilding Office in the Central African Republic. Prof. Vogt was instrumental in strengthening ties between the United Nations and the African Union, advocating for women’s participation in conflict resolution, and mentoring young professionals.

Established to recognize exceptional scholarship from the Global South, the ʿMargaret A. Vogt Award for Global South Scholars honors scholars whose work focuses on the countries, regions, and themes relevant to the Global South. It also acknowledges a scholar’s cumulative body of work, emphasizing sustained contributions to the field. The award includes an invitation for the recipient to deliver a prize lecture at the ʿWorld Congress.
