Julio Teehankee (Philippines)

Julio C. Teehankee, Ph.D., is a Full Professor and Research Fellow of Political Science at De La Salle University, Manila. He has held various academic leadership roles, including Chair of the Department of Political Science (1994-2007), Chair of the Department of International Studies (2008-2013), and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts (2013-2016). Additionally, he served as a Council Member of the ʿ (2019-2021), President of the Philippine Political Science Association (2016-2019), and President of the Asian Political and International Studies Association (2009-2011). He is the Regional Manager of the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) for Southeast Asia and the Pacific. He earned a PhD (with distinction) in Development Studies from De La Salle University and an MA in Political Science from the University of the Philippines. He has held visiting appointments at several prestigious universities worldwide, including the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Osaka University, Waseda University, the Australian National University, and the London School of Economics and Political Science. His research focuses on popular participation, governance, democratization, and contested institutions in East and Southeast Asia.

He has published extensively on elections, party politics, and political dynasties. His latest books include Rethinking Parties in Democratizing Asia, published by Routledge in 2023, and More Political Than We Admit: Theories and the Problematic of Philippine Politics, published by Vibal in 2024. He sits on the editorial board of several academic journals, including Asian Affairs: An American Review, Asian Journal of Comparative Politics, Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs, Asia Pacific Social Science Review, and the Philippine Political Science Journal. He is a regular political analyst for media outlets and hosts a YouTube channel, “Talk Politics with Julio Teehankee.”
